Terminator has always predicted the state of AI and tech, but before James Cameron moves ahead with more installments, he is awaiting the results of the ongoing AI rise.
Speaking at the Dell Technologies World, reporter Rod Mercado broke the news, which came directly from Cameron on-stage at the event. The filmmaker behind Terminator & T2: Judgement Day started a script for a project not too long ago.
Cameron tells the crowd that he began “writing a new Terminator movie three months ago.” He adds one factor on why he is delaying it a bit; the filmmaker claims he “wants to see how AI shakes out before he goes any further.”

While the filmmaker had little involvement in the films that followed T2, he returned to the franchise with Terminator: Dark Fate, for which he scored a story by credit and produced. In December of last year, the filmmaker teased that a complete reboot was “in discussion, but nothing has been decided.”
There are no official plans for the new Terminator yet, but this gives Cameron time to craft this treatment while finishing the third Avatar and filming both Avatar 4 & Avatar 5.
The still-untitled Avatar 3 is set for release on December 20th, 2024.
