James Gunn confirms several characters who’ll carry over into the new DC Universe

October 1, 2023 by EJ Moreno

No matter how much DC Studios tries to change, some things will always stay the same. That includes some of the favorites from the previous era!

Yes, in a new series of posts on social media, James Gunn is clarifying the comings and goings of the DC Universe line-up, and he dropped the information that a handful of characters are for sure staying around.

In response to a post about the ‘canon’ of the new project from DC Studios and which actors would stick around, Gunn gave a detailed answer. He posts on Threads, “Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year — a sort of aperitif to the DCU — & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that.

Gunn replied. “It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think its okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.”

Creature Commandos is the upcoming animated series from Gunn, featuring a star-studded voice cast that includes  Frank Grillo, Maria Bakalova, and David Harbour. With that project, the new canon era begins, leading to a new Superman, played by David Corenswet.

With that, a host of new characters will be included, but the filmmaker and DC Studios co-chair says expect some familiar faces. He adds, “And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy.”

A fan asked if the recently released Blue Beetle would play a part. Gunn confirmed, stating, “Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller and John Cena will Peacemaker.” Later, Gunn was asked about another Peacemaker character, and Vilgiante fans need not fret. Gunn offered, “Yes, Freddie [Stroma] as Vigilante is still around.”

It seems like James Gunn has new favorites that will need to stay around in this DC canon, but fans are curious if any others will return. What is the status of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn or Jason Momoa’s Aquaman? Only time will tell, but we will find out when Gunn and co-chair Peter Safran launch their new DC Studios in 2025.

The official synopsis for Superman: Legacy states that the film “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
