For those worried about needing to do homework before starting the new DC Universe, James Gunn lets fans rest assured that things are getting a fresh start.
On the new social media app Threads, Gunn tells fans, “DC Studios movies (and canon) start with Superman: Legacy.”
Gunn’s statement comes not long after his DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran opened up about the reboot in a recent Vanity Fair interview, where Safran told the publication: “The good news is, if you’ve seen nothing that we’ve done before, you can watch Superman Legacy, you can watch Creature Commandos, you can watch Peacemaker season two, and you can watch Blue Beetle. All of that. We are trying to minimize audience confusion and maximize their enjoyment.”
Helmed by James Gunn, Superman: Legacy stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

The official synopsis states the film “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
