James Gunn has no plans to make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4

April 20, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Having agreed to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after his original dismissal by Disney, writer-director James Gunn will soon be reuniting with the cast of the cosmic superhero blockbusters to finish not only the trilogy, but – it seems – his full Guardians story.

During an Instagram Q&A, Gunn responded to a question from a fan asking about the possibility of a fourth Guardians film, stating that: “I absolutely never said I wouldn’t do a Vol. 2, as I planned to do a trilogy from the beginning if the first one worked. I have no plans to do a [fourth].”

Now, of course, those plans could change if (when?) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 proves to be another massive hit for Marvel; however, Gunn has said as early as 2017 that the three films will “tell one story” and “work together as a whole”, as well as sharing his belief that any fourth film would follow a new group of Guardians as Vol. 3 will bring Star-Lord and company’s story to an end.

Gunn is expected to start work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 once he completes work on Warner Bros. and DC Films’ The Suicide Squad, and has confirmed this month that the schedule is unlikely to be affected by the current global health crisis.
