With The Suicide Squad now out in the wild and HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker in post-production, director James Gunn will soon be heading back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to round out his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy with Vol. 3.
Given the family friendly nature of the MCU, we’re certainly not going to see the same kind of carnage and body count as Gunn’s DC debut when Star-Lord and company reunite, but the filmmaker has teased to Entertainment Tonight that not all of the Guardians may make it through to the end credits of their third movie.
“There’s a much bigger sense of danger for all of our characters [in the Suicide Squad] because we know all of them could die, whereas in Guardians, yes, obviously I killed Yondu, I killed the big original Groot, but it isn’t the same thing. We know most of them are going to make it out alive. At least for two movies… You’ll have to wait and see.”
That certainly sounds ominous… and considering the fact that with the events of Infinity War and Endgame we’ve seen every Guardian “die” at some point bar one, Rocket has to be a pretty hot favourite, right?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set for release on May 5th 2023.
