Back in December during a Disney Investor Day, it was announced that two Guardians of the Galaxy projects were in the works, including the Holiday Special and Vol.3, which are set to be filmed back-to-back – with production starting later this year.
Now, in an interview with Collider, writer and director James Gunn has confirmed that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will contain plot points that fans need to know before the third major instalment.
“It’s in-canon, it’s about the Guardians, you’re gonna learn stuff that you need to learn before Volume 3, and it’s great, I’m really happy with it.”
Gunn has also previously confirmed that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which is canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will take place after the events of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder but before the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Plot details for both the Holiday Special and Vol.3 are being kept under wraps but it is safe to assume that all of the Guardians will be returning including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Sean Gunn as Kraglin and Rocket Raccoon, and Karen Gillan as Nebula.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is slated to premiere on Disney+ in December 2022, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set to follow on May 5th 2023.
