James Gunn is making some bold decisions with Superman: Legacy.
Per Vanity Fair, the upcoming DC Studios launching point has cast three key DC Universe icons, including a potential Green Lantern. Gunn’s first-ever Superman film will now include Isabela Merced, who will play Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion will play a Green Lantern named Guy Gardner.
Merced recently starred as the title character in Dora and the Lost City of Gold and will join the DCU as Hawkgirl, marking the character’s live-action film debut. Hawkgirl’s male counterpart, Hawkman, was recently featured in 2022’s Black Adam.
Gathegi is best known for his time as Laurent in the Twilight films but made his comic book movie debut as Darwin in X-Men: First Class. He’ll play Mister Terrific, a.k.a. Michael Holt, which Vanity Fair describes as “not only a skilled combatant but one of the world’s most brilliant inventors and tacticians, orbited by the floating T-Sphere weapons he designed.”
As for Fillion, he’s best known for the cult classic series Firefly as well as appearing in James Gunn’s horror debut Slither in 2006. He was last seen in this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He’ll take on the role of Guy Gardner, one of the most overlooked Green Lanterns. This will also mark the first time Guy Gardner has appeared in live-action.
The trio will join David Corenswet, recently cast in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy alongside Rachel Brosnahan, who will star as Lois Lane. Little is known about the project, but reports claim we will see Superman face off with The Authority in a world already familiar with superheroes.
The official synopsis states Superman: Legacy “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy is scheduled to open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
