James Mangold bumped Swamp Thing to the top of people’s hype list with one simple tweet.
As we learned yesterday, the relaunched DC Studios dropped its upcoming slate of films, with Peter Safran and James Gunn leading the charge. One of the projects announced was a new Swamp Thing film, a new horror-inspired adaptation.
The project has gained an impressive filmmaker to helm it, with James Mangold seemingly expressing interest in directing the film. This comes from a tweet the filmmaker made on Wednesday morning, just dropping a strip from one of Swamp Thing’s most famous comics. The artwork comes from co-creator Bernie Wrightson and depicts a moody atmosphere.

James Gunn retweeted Mangold’s post to fuel the fire, and industry scooper BigScreenLeaks teased that the deal is done and Mangold is already attached. At the relaunch presentation for DC Studios, Gunn and Safran said the new movie “investigates the dark origins of Swamp Thing.” They did call it a “horrific film” but noted the character could still work with other DC characters.
Swamp Thing was introduced in the comics in July 1971 and made his live-action debut in 1982’s Swamp Thing and its 1989 sequel, The Return of Swamp Thing. The character appeared in video games and various animated outings before having a short-lived series in 2019.

James Mangold is an exciting pick for the film, given he’s never helmed a straightforward horror film before. Mangold is best known for the 2005 biopic Walk The Line, 2017’s superhero drama Logan, and the award-winning Ford v Ferrari released in 2019. His next film is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the first film in the long-running franchise not directed by Steven Spielberg.
We shall see if Mangold stays attached to the project in the future, as it will seemingly have a release after 2025’s Superman: Legacy and The Batman: Part II from DC Studios.
