James Mangold has done it all as a filmmaker. From Academy Award-nominated work to reinventing Wolverine, Mangold can do no wrong in many fans’ eyes.
That’s why the hype for James Mangold’s upcoming Swamp Thing film is so high. With hits like Logan and Ford v Ferrari under his belt, fans are curious about what he can do when he enters the world of horror and superheroes.
Speaking with Variety as he promotes the new Indiana Jones movie, the director opened up about Swamp Thing, and he stresses he’s going for a standalone gothic horror without trying to force into a DCU bubble.
“While I’m sure DC views Swamp Thing as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster,” Mangold tells Variety.
This project has been on Mangold’s mind for a while; the filmmaker says, “toying for years with the idea of making a kind of Frankenstein movie,” before stressing that he’s “just doing my own thing with this; just a standalone.”
“I am interested in making something that works from beginning to end — to curtain,” he notes. “Otherwise, I’m working on the world’s most expensive television show.”
