Jason Momoa discusses how Aquaman tells an origin story

April 26, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Star of Aquaman, Jason Momoa, has talked about how his solo film tells an origin story.

Origin stories are a contentious issue in the superhero movie sphere. Some people love them; some people could very much live without them. But one thing is for sure, when they are done right, they can be an incredibly effective storytelling device.

One character who is about to get an origin story told on screen is the DCEU’s Aquaman, and Jason Momoa, who has previously starred as the hero in Justice Leauge, has spoken to Entertainment Tonight about how this plays out on camera:

“I think after Justice League, everyone got a pretty refreshing look at what Zack Snyder intended for Aquaman.” Momoa began. “He’s a little grump and gruffy. Now, we get to know why he’s that way. We’re in the origin story, and we’re going to find out why he wasn’t loved in Atlantis and why he wasn’t loved on the surface. Now he has something that’s beautiful that can help the world…And it’s someone bringing it out of you even though you don’t think you have it.”

What do you think? Are you excited to see an origin story for Aquaman on screen? Or would you rather see more of the hero in the present day, post-Justice League?

Arthur Curry learns that he is the heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, and must step forward to lead his people and to be a hero to the world.

Aquaman is directed by James Wan (The Conjuring) and stars Jason Momoa as the titular hero, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, along with Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Dr. Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Ludi Lin as Murk, Michael Beach as Jesse Kane, Randall Park as Otis Dhanji as a young Arthur Curry and Graham McTavish in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
