Suicide Squad and Bright star Jay Hernandez is set to follow in the footsteps of Tom Selleck by taking on the role of Thomas Magnum in CBS’ upcoming reboot of the classic 1980s TV drama Magnum, P.I..
Developed by Peter Lenkov (Hawaii Five-O, MacGyver) , with Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond) set to direct, the pilot follows Hernandez’s Magnum, “a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. With help from fellow vets Theodore ‘TC’ Calvin and Orville ‘Rick’ Wright, as well as that of disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins, Magnum takes on the cases no one else will, helping those who have no one else to turn to.”
CBS’ Magnum, P.I. pilot is the second attempt to relaunch the series in consecutive years, with ABC developing a sequel project last year which would have followed Magnum’s daughter Lily ‘Tommy’ Magnum, although it failed to make it to the pilot stage.
The original Magnum, P.I. – which saw Selleck starring alongside John Hillerman, Roger E. Mosley and Larry Mantetti – ran for eight seasons on CBS between 1980 and 1988.
