Despite stepping away from the MCU with this year’s Avengers: Endgame, it seems that Robert Downey Jr. may be set to reprise his role as Tony Stark once again, albeit in animated form as part of the Disney+ series What If…?.
Although his name was absent from the huge voice cast that Marvel initially announced for the animated show, fellow MCU star Jeff Goldblum has seemingly confirmed Downey’s involvement with the series during an interview with Buzzfeed.
“Well, we’re talking about it in fact,” said Goldblum when asked if he’d be returning as The Grandmaster from Thor: Ragnarok in the upcoming sequel Thor: Love & Thunder. “You know, I hope so. I love Taika Waititi. He’s a great director and a friend of mine. So I hope so, but I played the part again a couple of days ago. I went to the Disney Studios and I recorded the Grandmaster’s voice for an episode of a show that’s going to be on Disney+ called What If…? where it’s an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel. And this episode included the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so Robert Downey will do a voice in that. And Korg, Taika Waititi, had already recorded his voice for that. So yeah, I enjoyed it for a couple of hours. I enjoyed doing that again. So the Grandmaster is well.”
As it happens, we may have another Tony Stark appearance to look forward to, as it has been reported that next year’s Black Widow movie will include a deleted scene from Captain America: Civil War featuring Tony alongside Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff.
Marvel’s What If…? is set to launch in 2021, and sees Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) voicing The Watcher alongside a who’s who of MCU stars including Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Taika Waititi as Korg, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, and Michael Rooker as Yondu.
