Seven years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean sailed into cinemas, and it has been choppy waters trying to steer the franchise back onto the big-screen. However, Pirates Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has provided an update on the future of the seafaring series.
While doing the press rounds for his latest film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Bruckheimer was asked by ComicBook.com about his blockbuster franchises, and the current state of the $4.5 billion grossing Pirates of the Caribbean series, revealing that it is still going ahead as a reboot.
“You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun, you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”
Bruckheimer’s comments seem to back up the notion that the next Pirates movie will feature a completely new cast, with previous stories suggesting that the Ted Elliott (Pirates of the Caribbean 1-4) and Craig Mazin (The Last of Us)-scripted project will star younger actors.
No mention was made of the Margot Robbie-produced Pirates reboot, which was being developed at the same time, but was reportedly dead in the water as of November 2022.
There’s clearly still life in the old dog yet, because 2017’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales still managed to sail away with $800 million at the worldwide box-office.
