Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara are set to reunite on-screen once again for Pawel Pawlikowski’s based on a true story thriller The Island.
According to The Hollywood Reporter the real life husband and wife will portray an attractive American couple in the 1930s who escape to their own private paradise on a deserted island and live off the land. But after a millionaire passing by on his yacht turns the couple into a tabloid newspaper sensation, a self-styled countess appears with two lovers and plans to build a luxury hotel on the island. As battle lines are quickly drawn, psychological warfare ensues between the countess and the American couple as sexual infidelity, betrayal and eventually murder takes place among the island interlopers.
This will be the fourth time Phoenix and Mara have starred together following Spike Jonze’s Her, dramedy Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, and biblical epic Mary Magdalene. The Island will be written and directed by Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski, whose last films were the critically acclaimed one-two of Ida and Cold War, filming is set to get under way early next year.
Before that we will see Mara headlining Sara Polley’s potential Oscar-botherer Women Talking (read our ★★★★★ review here), while Phoenix is set to don the face paint once again for Joker: Folie à Deux, which is set to dance its way onto screens on October 4th, 2024.
