Deadline is reporting some potentially exciting news that Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice) could be set to take on the role of Jesus Christ in a new film about Mary Magdalene.
The film is being directed by Garth Davis (Top of the Lake), with Rooney Mara (Carol) in the lead role of Mary Magdalene, and the filmmakers are keen for Phoenix to join the film opposite Mara. A deal for the actor is said to be a little way off just yet, as the website reports that Phoenix’s schedule may be a hindrance to his involvement, but the producers are still keen to reunite the Her co-stars.
See-Saw Films, the production company behind The King’s Speech, have put the project together, with Universal Pictures set to distribute the film internationally alongside The Weinstein Company who are set to handle domestic distribution.
Mary Magdalene is set for release in 2017.
