Although Warner Bros. is keeping its DC Extended Universe plans pretty close to its chest, it is believed that the next DC Films project to go into production will be Suicide Squad 2. And, during an interview with Yahoo! to promote his new Netflix series Altered Carbon, Joel Kinnaman has been discussing his hopes for the follow-up to 2016’s hit supervillain ensemble.
“[Suicide Squad] was a great set-up, great characters. I think when we do the second one I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a more grounded version of the film,” said Kinnaman, who plays Rick Flag. “The characters are so extreme it could be more effective if we saw less sorcery. I think the characters become more extreme if you see them in conjunction with real people.”
It remains to be seen if Kinnaman will get his wish to do away with magic entirely, as unconfirmed rumours suggest that Task Force X will find themselves charged with tracking down a weapon of mass destruction – none other than Shazam’s arch-enemy Black Adam, played by Dwayne Johnson.
Kinnaman also provided a brief update on the project during a chat with Collider, adding that: “I just know that they are working intensely on it. I know it’s a big priority at Warner Bros., but it’s an equally big priority to get it right. We all felt that we had lightning in a bottle, in a way, and it partly got away from us, a little bit. It’s really important to harness everything that was great about it, and then fix what didn’t really work. So, I know they’re working on it, and we’ll see. I’m very excited to read something, but I don’t have any new information.”
Suicide Squad 2 is being directed by Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant), and is expected to arrive in theaters at some point in 2019.
