Are we nearing the start of The Thing’s long-awaited sequel? Over three years after rumblings of a new entry began, the filmmaker behind the 1982 cult classic has hinted at what will come next.
As mysterious and elusive as ever, John Carpenter opens up about the possibility of The Thing 2 and why he can’t confirm anything just yet. Appearing at a recent Texas horror convention, he spills some vague info.
Carpenter tells the audience we could soon see a new follow-up to his beloved film. Carpenter reveals, “I have been sworn to secrecy, okay, because there may be, I don’t know if there will be… there may be a Thing 2.”
When dealing with the forever-aloof John Carpenter, you must take the news with a grain of salt. He’s been known to troll audiences, but he could also refer to another Thing-related project like a novel, comic, or video game.
The Thing was released in 1982, retelling the influential 1951 film The Thing From Another World. Carpenter’s alien body horror experience was met with mixed reactions at the time and suffered at the box office due to its proximity to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial‘s release. The film would later gain a cult following and become one of Carpenter’s most beloved films. There was also a 2002 video game for the original Xbox and a less-successful prequel in 2011.
