Back in May of last year it was announced that Paolo Sorrentino is following up his acclaimed HBO/Sky limited series The Young Pope entitled The New Pope, and now comes word from Variety that John Malkovich has been cast alongside the returning Jude Law.
Law was not expected to return for the second series, although it is presumed that he will be reprising his Golden Globe-nominated role as Lenny Belardo/Pius XIII. If rumours are to be believed, Malkovich will also be portraying the new pontiff.
Filming on The New Pope is slated to get underway in Italy this November, with Sorrentino writing the series alongside Umberto Contarello and Stefano Bises.
Malkovich has several features incoming this year, including Mile 22, Bird Box and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, while Jude Law appears as Albus Dumbledore in November’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and also joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year with his role as Mar-Vell in the superhero blockbuster Captain Marvel.
