Fans of Keanu Reeves’ once-retired, dog-avenging hitman John Wick won’t only have a new film to look forward to in 2017; Lionsgate Entertainment has announced its partnership with Dynamite Entertainment (via CBR) to bring Wick to the comic book page. Here’s what Dynamite CEO and publisher Nick Barrucci had to say about the new series:
“John Wick was just an exciting film, mixing martial arts action with snappy dialogue and smart writing. As the credits rolled, you were left wanting more, and it was obvious that they had the makings of a franchise. We were quick to pursue the opportunity to develop a comic book series, and are thrilled to have been granted the rights to tell an all-new series with the character.”
There’s no word yet on when in John Wick’s story the series will take place, but it does sound like it will be linked to the feature films, and will dive deeper into the intriguing and mysterious world of hitmen hinted at in the original movie. The Senior Vice President of Consumer Products at Lionsgate, Sheila Clarke, teased the new possibilities:
“A comic series is the perfect vehicle to engage in a different way with fans as well as expand the John Wick universe. We found a great partner in industry leader Dynamite Entertainment who shared our passion and enthusiasm for the franchise.”
A creative team for the series has yet to be officially announced, though Giovanni Valletta did some pencil tests and announced his involvement via Instagram…
As we await more news on the comic series, we can look forward to Wick’s next big screen adventure, John Wick: Chapter 2 in theaters February 10th, 2017.
