Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz are set to reunite in Day Drinker, an action film from director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) with Lionsgate producing, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Day Drinker follows “a cruise ship bartender [who] meets a mysterious day drinker—only for both of them to find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly, and connected in unexpected ways.”
Depp and Cruz have starred together in several films before, beginning with 2001’s crime biopic Blow followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Murder on the Orient Express.
The script was written by Zach Dean (The Tomorrow War) and he will also produce the film alongside Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee (John Wick) and Adam Kolbrenner.
“Day Drinker combines a highly commercial concept with wildly outrageous twists and turns all set in an incredible world, and there is no better filmmaker than Marc or two more perfectly cast actors than Johnny and Penélope to bring that world to life,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson.
Day Drinker will mark Depp’s first big budget studio production since his public divorce and legal troubles began a few years ago which saw him replaced in films like Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and his iconic Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Cruz recently starred in Michael Mann’s Ferrari and Webb recently filmed Disney’s Snow White live-action adaptation which will be released next summer.
