Back in 2012, it was revealed that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito plan to reteam for a sequel to the 1988 hit comedy Twins, which would see Julius and Vincent joined by a third brother – hence the title Triplets – who will be potentially be portrayed by Eddie Murphy.
Frozen star Josh Gad was subsequently brought in to pen the screenplay with Ryan Dixon, and now Gad has provided an update on to The Arnold Fans, stating that the script is finished, but the project is on hold for the time being.
“You know… the script is actually done. Everybody agrees that it’s great. We wound up doing two drafts. Universal, I think, hit the pause button temporarily for whatever reason – internally I think they are trying to figure out if they want to do a sequel or not. I would say if there’s an outpouring of affection, that may move the needle, but I think it’s on hold right now. But everybody read the script and loved it, so I hope it sees the light of day at some point. It’s there and in great shape.”
As for where Julius and Vincent find themselves some quarter of a century after the first movie, Gad said: “Their lives have changed in that the two of them find themselves at a major crossroads where they’ve sort of grown apart over the years and what winds up bringing them together is a third brother they never knew they had who could potentially be played by Eddie Murphy.”
Twins isn’t the only film from Schwarzenegger’s back catalogue that he’s plans revisit, with Terminator Genisys set to land in in July, and the long-rumoured The Legend of Conan also on the horizon.
