It’s a story that has been orbiting the entertainment news pages since 1987, but now a sequel to Mel Brooks’ Star Wars parody Spaceballs is set to become a reality over at Amazon MGM Studios.
According to Deadline the legendary comedy director will remain on board as a producer on Spaceballs 2, which will be helmed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar‘s Josh Greenbaum, who will work from a script written by Josh Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu). Gad will also star in the sequel.
Released by MGM in 1987, Spaceballs was a sci-fi send-up of George Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy, with a smattering of other notable movies mixed in for good measure (Star Trek, Alien, Planet of the Apes).
Spaceballs told the story of the diminutive Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and President Skroob (Mel Brooks), who attempt to steal the atmosphere of the planet Druidia, only to be met with the resistance of the heroic Lone Starr (Bill Pullman), his hairy companion Barf (the late, great John Candy), and the Druish princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga).
Sadly it stiffed at the box-office to the tune of $38.1 million, but it has developed a cult following over the years, with Brooks constantly talking up a potential sequel that was knowingly called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.
There are no plot details yet, and it is in the very early stages of development, but let us know whether you’re a fan of Spaceballs, and if you’re excited that you’ll get a chance to return to Mel Brooks’ world by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
