Joss Whedon is still on board as director for Batgirl, despite recent rumours

November 23, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Despite recent rumors that director Joss Whedon was no longer involved in the upcoming Batgirl film, the director may still be on board after all.  EW claims to have several sources confirming that Whedon is, in fact, still attached to the film. The report claims that Joss Whedon is actively writing the script, and that there have been no talks whatsoever about the director leaving, or being fired from the project.

The initial rumors of his removal popped up right around the time that Justice League hit theaters. The film has been more-or-less panned critically, and has struggled at the box office with the lowest domestic opening of any DCEU movie. Now, given that Whedon put the finishing touches on the film, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to think that Warner Bros. were less than pleased with the director, and decided to end their working relationship. Also, it’s important to note that Warner Bros. had no interest in a Batgirl film before Whedon pitched the idea, which makes the studio possibly less attached to the project to begin with.

Further lending fuel to the rumors that Joss is out, is the director’s private life, and how that has recently come into the spotlight, being called a “hypocrite preaching feminist ideals”. Given the current climate in Hollywood, the studio may feel the need to bring in someone with less controversy attached.

However, these all remain rumors at the moment. The initial report claiming that Whedon was removed from the project has since been taken offline. Only time will tell, but in the meantime, you can see Joss Whedon’s take on a DC property right now, as Justice League is currently in theaters.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League will reunite Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta and Robin Wright as General Antiope alongside J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard (The Danish Girl) as Mera, Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) as Vulko and Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Steppenwolf.
