Judd Apatow and Steven Spielberg are set to join forces for Cola Wars, the true story of Pepsi and Cola-Cola’s high-profile rivalry that began in the 1980s.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures will back up the reported $1 million that they paid for the pitch by getting Apatow (Knocked Up) to direct, with Spielberg (Schindler’s List) producing through Amblin Entertainment.
Written by Jason Shuman (Acapulco) and Ben Queen (Cars 2), Cola Wars will depict the story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s dominance as the world’s favorite cola drink. It was a move which started the titular head-to-head that took place during the mid-1980s, incorporating everything from Michael Jackson’s high-profile accident, to the taste-test promos we still see today.
Cola Wars would mark Apatow’s first feature film since pandemic-comedy The Bubble, while Spielberg is currently in pre-production on his UFO-themed event movie The Dish.
