Having rose to fame performing skits on Saturday Night Live featuring songs like “I’m on a Boat” and “Dick in a Box”, comedy trio Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone – better known as The Lonely Island – will now be taking their music parody project to the big screen. Universal have bought the rights with Schaffer (Hot Rod, The Watch) and Taccone (MacGruber) co-directing. THR are reporting that Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids) has signed on to produce with the trio executive producing and lending their hands to writing duties.
Their debut album ‘Incredibad’ was released back in 2009 while Samberg and company were still active on the SNL roster but after saying their goodbyes The Lonely Island then released their second album in 2013 titled ‘The Wack Album’ which featured duets with some of music’s biggest names including Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and Adam Levine. It was co-produced by Pharrell Williams and Billie Joe Armstrong. The group also co-wrote and performed “Everything is Awesome” which featured in the LEGO Movie.
Since then Samberg has gone on to bigger and better things in Brooklyn Nine Nine where he stars as immature NYPD Detective Jake Peralta who works at Brooklyn’s 99th Precinct. It won a Golden Globe this year for Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical and Samberg also took a Globe home for Best Performance by an Actor, Comedy or Musical.
