The search for a young Albus Dumbledore is over, with Variety reporting that Jude Law has been cast as the wizard for Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel.
“As fans ourselves, we are thrilled to have Jude Law joining the Fantastic Beasts cast, playing a character so universally adored,” said Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures. “Jude has been a member of the Warner Bros. family for years and we’re excited to embark on this new adventure with him.”
In the much-anticipated new Wizarding World film, Law will portray Dumbledore long before the iconic wizard became the Headmaster at Hogwarts, as he has been known in the Harry Potter books and movies. We meet him decades earlier, when Dumbledore is still serving as the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor. He is also a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald, the charismatic dark wizard who believes wizards are superior to Muggles and No-Majs.
Fantastic Beasts 2 has once again been written by J.K. Rowling, with David Yates returning to direct. The second of the planned five-film prequel series will take place in 1928 and sees the return of Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), Katherine Waterston (Porpentina Goldstein), Dan Fogler (Jacob Kowalski), Ailson Sudol (Queenie Goldstein) and Ezra Miller (Credence Barebond), as well as Zoe Kravitz as Leta Lestrange and Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald.
