Bad news for fans of the Material Girl and Ozark star Julia Garner, because Madonna’s self-directed biopic, that was set to star the Emmy Award winning actress, has been scrapped at Universal.
The Madonna movie was one of a number of musical biopics heading our way, and having Garner embody one of pop’s greatest icons felt like a perfect piece of casting, but according to Variety the project is no longer in development at Universal Pictures.
While there has been no reason given by Madonna, the studio or Garner, it is speculated that the pop star’s recently announced world tour has become her priority, although it adds that insiders familiar with Madonna have said she remains committed to making a film about her life one day.
Garner had reportedly beaten a number of actresses to the coveted role, including Florence Pugh, Euphoria star Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira, and supposedly had to undertake a Madonna course, on which she worked out, ran performances, and attempted to capture the iconic pop singer.
