Max Barbakow’s Palm Springs was one of the outstanding films of 2020, and he’s set to follow it up with a body-swap comedy starring the blockbuster pairing of Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts.
According to Deadline Amazon Studios won a four-way battle for the rights to Barbakow’s untitled pitch, which will be produced by LuckyChap Entertainment, the label owned by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, alongside Roberts and her Red Om Films banner, Aniston’s Echo Films, and Barbakow.
Beyond the fact that Barbakow will write and direct the movie, very little is known about the project apart from that it will star Roberts and Aniston.
Barbakow was able to a take the similarly tired trope of a Groundhog Day-style comedy and turn it into something fresh with Palm Strings, so they’ll be hoping he can do the same for the body-swap movie, which has been used numerous times throughout the years with Vice Versa (1988), Freaky Friday (1976 & 2003), The Change Up (2011), It’s a Boy Girl Thing (2006), and Freaky (2020).
Julia Roberts is fresh off Ticket to Paradise, which once again proved her pulling-power by grossing $169 million worldwide at a time when comedies and mid-range adult fare hasn’t been performing at the box-office, while this March Jennifer Aniston is due to set sail on a two-hander trip of her own with Adam Sandler sequel Murder Mystery 2.
