Variety is reporting that Julia Roberts has signed on to produce and star in Little Bee, a feature adaptation of Chris Cleave’s 2008 novel, originally published as The Other Hand, which is in development at Amazon Studios.
The project is being penned by Kathleen Robertson (Murder in the First) and will see Roberts as British magazine editor Sarah O’Rourke, who meets a young Nigerian asylum seeker called Little Bee during a conflict in the Niger Delta, with the two then reunited in England several years later.
Nicole Kidman had previously been attached to produce and star in a Little Bee adaptation which was set up at BBC Films back in 2009, but never came to fruition.
Julia Roberts was last seen in the critically acclaimed Wonder, and has the feature film Ben Is Back and TV series Homecoming from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail on her upcoming slate.
