Despite coming under fire when it was first announced that a reboot of the beloved 1995 Robin Williams movie was in development, Sony scored a huge success with December’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, with the film proving a hit with audiences and critics alike.
Holding its own at the box office despite competition from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Welcome to the Jungle has now reached a new milestone, overtaking Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man to become Sony’s highest grossing domestic release ever.
In North America, the film has grossed $404 million, topping the $403.7 million record set by Spider-Man back in 2002. Globally, it is Sony’s second biggest release of all time behind Skyfall ($1.1 billion), having pulled in an impressive $951 million.
As you’d expect, Sony has already announced a sequel which is being fast-tracked for release around Christmas 2019, and actor Dwayne Johnson has shared a brief update on his Instagram, as well as thanking fans for making Welcome to the Jungle such a success…
