Online video channel Machinima is teaming up with NBC Universal and Fast & Furious and Star Trek helmer Justin Lin for a reboot of the 80s classic Knight Rider, which is being eyed to arrive online in 2017.
“Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science-fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact,” said Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein. “Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on reinvigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans.”
The original Knight Rider – which of course starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight – ran for four seasons between 1982 and 1986, and was followed by numerous TV movies, spinoffs, and a short-lived 2008 reboot. There’s also been a lot of talk of a big screen version over the past few years, with Chris Pratt rumoured as a potential star.
Knight Rider will join Machinima’s other original digital content, such as Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn.
