Godzilla x Kong won’t be ending any time soon, as Legendary is back with a new sequel and the studio has hired actress Kaitlyn Dever (No One Will Save You) to lead the human side of the next chapter of the Monsterverse.
According to Deadline, Legendary is “looking to build on its human characters” and saw Dever as the best choice. Grant Sputore will direct this new Godzilla x Kong title based on a script by Dave Callaham. The outlet describes it as “a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong, and an assortment of other Titans.”
Dever will next star in the Netflix limited series Apple Cider Vinegar and explode into the mainstream with her upcoming turn in the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us.
We’ve seen a shockingly long franchise with these Legendary Monsterverse films. It all began with 2014’s Godzilla, then spawned a new King Kong adaptation in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. Then the franchise got even bigger with 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters and 2021’s Godzilla Vs. Kong. Now we have the most recent record-breaking Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire brought in $571.9 million worldwide and became the franchise’s highest-grossing installment as well as the highest-grossing Godzilla film of all time. The Monsterverse has grossed over $2.5 billion to date at the global box office.
