Results of the 82nd annual Academy Awards…
Kathryn Bigelow made history last night as she became the first woman to receive the prestigious Best Director Oscar for her work on the 2009 Iraq War thriller The Hurt Locker, beating out ex-husband James Cameron who was nominated in the same category for box office juggernaut Avatar.
The Hurt Locker was the big winner of the night, taking home six awards including Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay (Mark Boal) and the top honour, Best Film.
The acting categories were dominated by hot favourites Jeff Bridges (Best Actor – Crazy Heart), Sandra Bullock (Best Actress – The Blind Side), Christoph Waltz (Best Supporting Actor – Inglourious Basterds) and Mo’nique (Best Supporting Actress – Precious), while Avatar received recognition in three of the technical categories – Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
Pixar’s Up was named Best Animated Feature to continue the studio’s domination of that category and also received Best Musical Score, while Geoffrey Fletcher took home Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on Precious. The Cove was named Best Documentary Feature with Argentina’s El Secreto de Sus Ojos picking up Best Foreign Language Film.
