The classic horror story Frankenstein will be getting reimagined as Lisa Frankenstein from director Zelda Williams (Kappa Kappa Die) and Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (Tully). Deadline reports that Kathryn Newton (Freaky) and Cole Sprouse (Riverdale) will lead the cast.
Taking place in 1989, Lisa Frankenstein will follow “an unpopular high schooler who accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams using the broken tanning bed in her garage.”
Cody will executive produce the film alongside Mason Novick, who has worked with her on many of Cody’s other films such as Juno, Jennifer’s Body, Young Adult and Tully, through MXN Entertainment and Jeff Lampert as an executive producer. Focus Features is developing the project with its vice president Michelle Momplaisir as a creative executive.
Frankenstein was first written in 1818 by Mary Shelley and follows Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a scientist obsessed with creating life by reanimating human tissue. He creates the Creature, but is repulsed by his work and the havoc the Creature ensues to get revenge on Frankenstein and his loved ones. Since its publication, it has been hailed as a Gothic classic and often been cited as the first science fiction novel. Many adaptations have been made, though Frankenstein is often erroneously used to refer to the monster rather than the doctor himself.
Lisa Frankenstein will begin production this summer.
