Kevin Costner is set to ride on out to the high plains once again for his first directorial outing since 2013’s Open Range, with the news that he’ll find himself on both sides of the camera for Western epic Horizon.
According to Deadline the Academy Award winning director of Dances With Wolves will star in the film, produce it and finance it through his Territory Pictures production company.
It is reported that Horizon has been a long time passion project for the Yellowstone star, and that it will chronicle a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American west.
Costner told Deadline “America’s expansion into the west was one that was fraught with peril and intrigue from the natural elements, to the interactions with the indigenous peoples who lived on the land, and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it,” continuing to say that “Horizon tells the story of that journey in an honest and forthcoming way, highlighting the points of view and consequences of the characters life and death decisions.”
Casting will begin in February, with shooting set for a late summer start.
