Kevin Feige on Black Panther’s role in Captain America: Civil War

June 30, 2015 by Gary Collinson

There’s certainly a lot of excitement about next year’s Phase Three-launching Captain Amercia: Civil War. Not only is it adapting one of Marvel’s most acclaimed story arcs, but it’s also bringing together pretty much every character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as introducing Spider-Man!

However, the wall-crawler won’t be the only new addition to the MCU in Civil War, as Chadwick Boseman is set to make his debut as T’Challa, a.k.a. the Black Panther, aheaqd of his solo movie in 2018. Speaking to Birth.Movies.Death, Marvel chief Kevin Feige has offered up a few details about the Wakandan’s role in the threequel, and why they decided to introduce him in the movie.

“[Black Panther] is a role that he is still in the beginning phases of taking on, it’s a mantle he is only beginning to take on because his father is older… The reason we introduced him in Civil War is because we needed a third party. We needed fresh eyes who wasn’t embedded with the Avengers and who has a very different point of view than either Tony or Steve. We said, ‘We need somebody like Black Panther… why don’t we just use Black Panther?’ That’s how it went in the development process.”

The site went on to ask what T’Challa and T’Chaka are currently up to following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, with Feige responding that: “oday, pre-Civil War, post-Ultron I think he and his father are saying, ‘A bunch of vibranium just got out of here and wreaked a lot of havoc. Maybe we can’t stay behind these borders anymore, maybe we have to stick our heads out and make at least an attempt to be a part of the rest of the world right now, while at the same time protecting our people.’ That’s sort of where we meet him in Civil War.”

Captain America: Civil War is set for release on April 29th 2016 in the UK and May 6th 2016 in the States, with Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) directing a cast that includes Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (The Vision), Don Cheadle (James Rhondes/War Machine), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter) and Frank Grillo (Brock Rumlow/Crossbones) and William Hurt (General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross) alongside new additions Chadwick Boseman (Get on Up) as T’Challa/Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl (Rush) as Baron Zemo, Tom Holland (The Impossible) as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
