In the build up to the release of Captain America: Civil War, there was some speculation among fans as to whether Marvel would take a leaf out of its comic book universe by killing off Steve Rogers, opening the door for a new character to succeed him as Captain America.
As we know that didn’t happen (speculation now turns to Avengers: Infinity War, the film that marks the end of Chris Evans’ current contract with Marvel Studios) but with Steve laying down the shield at the end of Civil War, Marvel does have the opportunity to introduce a new version of the Sentinel of Liberty, and Kevin Feige was asked about that very possibility during an interview with Collider.
“It’s a good question and if we look back at the comic books as our inspiration and as the well from which this all springs, then the answer is ‘no,'” said Feige when asked whether a Captain America movie has to revolve around Steve Rogers. “I’m not saying we’ll do it in the movie but I’ve read Captain America comics that don’t have Steve Rogers in them.”
Several characters have taken on the role of Captain America in the comic books, including Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson, both of whom seem like prime candidates to pick up the shield in the Cinematic Universe. However, given where we left them in Civil War, neither are likely to feature very highly on the list for a government-sanctioned Captain America, so they’re probably going to have to wait until Marvel does decide to off Steve Rogers…
