Having steered Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame to a combined global box office just shy of $3 billion (the latter temporarily dethroning Avatar as the biggest movie of all time), filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo would seem the ideal candidates to bring the curtain down on Marvel’s Multiverse Saga with the newly-announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
However, despite the fact that the brothers have mentioned Secret Wars as a dream project on multiple occasions, it seems it isn’t to be, as Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday following the big Phase Five and Phase Six reveals that the Russos’ aren’t attached to the next two Avengers outings.
“They are not connected to it,” Feige said. “They have been, I think, very direct about that. We love them, they love us. We want to find something to do together, but it’s not this.”

It had been reported last year that the Russos had been in talks to reunite with Marvel only for negotiations to hit an “impasse” following Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow lawsuit with Disney. Could that be the reason why we won’t see them back for Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars? Is Marvel’s Avengers director policy a strict two and done? Or are the brothers simply too busy with their multitude of projects at their own AGBO production company?
We’ll likely never know, but how do you feel about the news that the Russos won’t be back for the next two Avengers movies? Who would you like to see taking the reins? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars are set for release on May 2th 2025 and November 7th 2025 respectively.
