Rian Johnson has shown he is capable of directing projects in the murder mystery and science-fiction genres with Brick, the Oscar-nominated Knives Out, Looper and Star Wars: The Last Jedi respectively. However, it looks like the director won’t be getting involved in the horror genre any time soon (or ever).
In a recent discussion on Film Independent‘s Coffee Talks series (via Collider), Johnson revealed he will probably never direct a film within the world of horror as he isn’t emotionally connected to the genre.
“To be honest, it’s a genre that, because my family was really religious when I was growing up, I wasn’t allowed to see a lot of intense stuff. It’s not a genre I have a grounding in emotionally,” Johnson said. “A lot of friends like [Karyn Kusama] included are incredible filmmakers who engage with this genre and make movies that just amaze me. It’s not something that, for whatever reason, has drawn me.”
Although Johnson has no interest in directing a horror movie, he name-dropped some of his favourite horror films of all time including Ridley Scott‘s Alien and Jonathan Glazer‘s Under the Skin.
Johnson is currently writing the script for the upcoming sequel to Knives Out for Lionsgate which will see Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc solving another mystery in a different location with a brand-new cast of characters.
