Deadline is reporting that Kristen Wiig (Ghostbusters) is joining the cast of Alexander Payne’s new comedy/drama Downsizing.
Wiig is taking over the lead female role in the film, after original star Reese Witherspoon (Wild, Election) had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. She will join her Martian co-star Matt Damon in the film, which starts production during the spring. Christoph Waltz (Spectre) is also starring.
Downsizing “tells the story of an Omaha man who joins the throngs of people undergoing a new process that reduces people to a tiny fraction of their size and who moves to one of the many communities of small people that are sprouting up around the world.”
The film marks the third collaboration between Payne and Paramount Pictures, who produced his last film Nebraska.
Downsizing is scheduled for release in 2017.
