If someone with the comic book pedigree of Josh Brolin doesn’t answer your cosmic call to play a Green Lantern, who else do you approach?
That’s the conversation at DC Studios right now as they hunt for their Hal Jordan for the HBO series Lanterns. As we reported, the studio is looking to cast Josh Brolin for the role, but a new report has leaked who else is in the running.
Per Jeff Sneider, this seems to indicate that Ewan McGregor and Matthew McConaughey are being cited as potential backup choices to fill in for the role originally meant for Brolin.
McGregor has starred in a DC project before, donning the mask for Black Mask in 2020’s Birds of Prey. As for McConaughey, he’s not-so-shockingly avoided the superhero craze until now. Both could be fresh picks for the rugged veteran role.
Little is known about the plot, but reports note we’ll see “new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Damon Lindelof will be in charge of the series alongside Chris Mundy and DC comic author Tom King. Little is known about the series, but Lanterns is considered a “huge HBO-quality event.”
The writer’s room names reportedly include Justin Britt-Gibson (Into The Badlands), Breannah Gibson (Young Love), and Vanessa Baden Kelly (Animal Kingdom).
There’s no timetable for the production, so stay tuned to see who will play the titular Lanterns.
