Laurence Fishburne, who plays The Bowery King in the John Wick franchise, has confirmed that he will be reprising his role for the upcoming fourth instalment of the film series: “I should be going to Berlin within another couple of months or so.”
During the interview with Collider, Fishburne couldn’t say much about the plot of John Wick: Chapter 4, but he did tease that the next instalment will be “much deeper.”
“I read the script. It’s really, really cool. As much as it’s the same world as the other three films, it’s just deeper. It’s much deeper in terms of the code of the assassin and the relationship that he has with one character in particular who I think Mr. Watanabe is playing… is really the heart and soul of it.”
With Fishburne now confirming his return, he is set to star alongside a growing cast including Keanu Reeves who is reprising his role as the eponymous John Wick, Donnie Yen (Ip Man) who is playing a fellow assassin who “shares his same history and many of the same enemies”, Japanese-British pop singer Rina Sawayama as an as-yet-unrevealed female lead, Ian McShane who is returning as Winston, Shamier Anderson (Wynonna Earp), and Bill Skarsgård (It Chapter Two).
While plot details are being kept under wraps, it’s safe to assume that Chapter 4 will possibly pick up after the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum with Keanu Reeves’ John Wick aiming to get revenge against Ian McShane’s Winston for betraying him and taking the fight to the High Table directly.
Derek Kolstad, who wrote all three previous John Wick films, has previously revealed that he won’t be returning to write the screenplay for John Wick: Chapter 4. Instead, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum co-writer Shay Hatten and Michael Finch (American Assassin) will write the script with Chad Stahelski returning to direct once again.
