Since HBO and Damon Lindelof announced their Watchmen TV series, we haven’t been given much information regarding the show beyond Lindelof acting as the showrunner. Now, per Deadline, we finally have some concrete information regarding the project as Lindelof is working once again with his The Leftovers director Nicole Kassell, as she is set to direct the series’ pilot.
Kassell will also serve as an executive producer for Watchmen alongside Lindelof. In addition to her work on The Leftovers, she has directed episodes of HBO’s Westworld, Vinyl, AMC’s Better Call Saul and the upcoming Amazon series Castle Rock, based on the works of Stephen King. She is also known for her first feature, The Woodsman.
Written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons, Watchmen told a story of a group of retired heroes who suddenly begin getting murdered one by one. Trying to solve the mystery, they discovery a far reaching conspiracy against them that also puts the world in danger. Watchmen revolutionized the comic industry and the graphic novel genre, appearing on dozens of ‘Best of’ lists. Zack Snyder directed a feature film adaptation in 2009 while DC published a series of prequels in 2012.
Whether this new series is an adaptation of the graphic novel or will act as a prequel or some other spin-off is unknown as HBO and Lindelof have kept mum on what it will actually be. We theorized some possible routes the show could take with the material a few weeks ago, which you can check out here.
Production on Watchmen is rumoured to begin production in March.
