According to Deadline, Legendary Pictures has just closed a deal for Max Burnstein to write the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, which is set to hit theaters in 2018.
Burnstein wrote the first Godzilla film and just penned the studio’s King Kong origin film Skull Island. His involvement in both projects seems to indicate that the studio is aiming for a bit of cohesiveness to their monstrous franchises. Whether they’re connected or not remains to be seen, though many fans (including myself) would be open to the idea.
Burnstein is becoming a go-to guy for high-profile projects in Hollywood. Apart from the work he’s done for Legendary’s monsters, he wrote the script for their 2015 film Seventh Son starring Jeff Bridges, Disney’s space adventure Paladin, Mona, and the pilot for the upcoming Minority Report television series at 20th Century Fox.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, the untitled Godzilla sequel will roar into theaters on June 8, 2018 and pit the titular King of Monsters against Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.
