2023’s Fantastic Fest has announced its line-up for the Austin-based festival of freaks and geeks, and the opening night movie has been set as Macon Blair’s highly-anticipated remake of The Toxic Avenger. The news has afforded Legendary Pictures the opportunity to release a first look at Peter Dinklage’s titular Troma character, which you can check out below…
With original Toxic Avenger creators Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz on-board as producers, Macon Blair, director of the underrated Netflix gem Hold the Dark, has created what is described as a “contemporary reimagining” of the 1984 low-budget action-comedy film.
Starring Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage as a “struggling everyman who, when pushed into a vat of toxic waste, is transformed into a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends, and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.”
The Toxic Avenger also features Jacob Tremblay (Room), Taylour Paige (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Elijah Wood (Yellowjackets), Julia Davis (Nighty Night), and Kevin Bacon (Hollow Man) as the main villain.
Rated R for “strong violence, gore and graphic nudity,” The Toxic Avenger is yet to receive a release date, but expect news of that to follow its world premiere on September 28th.
The Alamo Drafthouse will also play host to the debut of Paramount+’s Pet Sematary prequel, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, as well as the first two episodes of Mike Flanagan’s Fall of the House of Usher.
