The Monsterverse has welcomed a new filmmaker.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Grant Sputore has been hired to direct the follow-up to this year’s Godzilla x Kong.
If you aren’t familiar, Sputore is best known for helming the 2019 Hilary Swank sci-fi movie I Am Mother. It was a Sundance premiere with an eventual debut on Netflix.
As previously reported, he’ll helm this film based on a script penned by Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse). Little is known about their script, but it will feature King Kong and Godzilla facing off against a new set of Titans.
The news comes as Adam Wingard steps down as director of the franchise installments. He was the filmmaker of 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and this year’s box office success, Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire.
The Monsterverse is known for its selection of notable filmmakers; first, Gareth Edwards kicked things off with 2014’s Godzilla, and then we got Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ film Kong: Skull Island. Following that started the collaboration era for the Monsterverse with Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the two previously mentioned Wingard films.
