Acclaimed comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis has revealed that he is working on an adult animated series adaptation of DC Comics’ Legion of Super-Heroes.
Posting on his official website, Bendis revealed that after handing in the pilot script for an adaptation of his graphic novel Cover, Bendis was asked by HBO Max if there were any DC properties he’d like to work on as a TV show.
“I may have yelled the word LEGION louder than you want to in a normal adult person business meeting,” writes Bendis. “At the moment it is being developed as an adult animated show. Can you tell I am jumping up and down about this? I’ve been working on it for a while and last week I was sent to the next phase.”
“It’s very early goings but I can tell you this will be an adaptation of the Legion of Superheroes that Ryan Sook and I have been working on the last few years. And just like that series, on sale now, it will harken back to so many classics while at the same time doing what Legion does: pushing all the ideas of superheroes forward in every direction.”
Bendis and Sook began their Legion of Super-Heroes run in 2019, with the ongoing series finishing up in 2021 after 12 issues and a two-part prelude. As Bendis notes, development on the animated series is only in its earliest stages, and so it may be some time before we have any further updates on the project.
