Back in October, Damon Wayans revealed that he had decided to quit the FOX TV series Lethal Weapon for health and family reasons, with the actor stating that he was “getting too old for this” and citing his diabetes and gruelling 16 hour days as factors in his decision.
Wayans had clashed with co-star Clayne Crawford during the first two season of the show, culminating with Crawford’s firing over various on set incidents. Wayans’ Roger Murtaugh was then subsequently teamed up with Sean William Scott’s Wesley Cole for the third season.
Despite quitting, Wayans did agree to appear in an additional two episodes of the third season, and now showrunner Matt Miller has suggested at the Television Critics Assocation press tour that Wayans could potentially return for another season after the producers altered his schedule and storylines to accommodate his issues.
“Let’s do it,” said Miller (via Deadline). “It made us all sit down and roll up our sleeves and say ‘we’re really hearing you, you’re sick, tired, what do you need’. It was a cry for help. We worked on ways that could fix his schedule and change some storylines to accommodate him. Since that time, it has been an absolute delight making the show. He has come to work with a smile. He brought all the crew together at the wrap last week. It was tough for him, this is a crazy show, he’s not a young guy, it’s really really gruelling and all I can say is that he’s in Hawaii right now, he got everyone on the crew these really expensive jackets and it was a really charmed experience from that moment.”
Apparently Fox chiefs are impressed with Lethal Weapon, feeling that it has now hit its stride, and the network is said to be keen to extend it beyond three seasons should the producers manage to convince Wayans to return.
