Lin-Manuel Miranda’s long-gestating Vivo is finally set to be made at Sony Pictures Animation. Deadline reports that Sony has picked up the animated feature and will be putting it on the fast track for a 2020 release. It was previously with Dreamworks, but after stalling for several years and with Miranda’s rising star power, the project is now moving forward.
Vivo will tell the story of a monkey who loves music and adventure, leading him to make a dangerous journey from Havana to Miami to fulfill his destiny. Miranda will write 11 original songs for the film, which is being scripted by Quiara Alegria Hudes. Hudes has previously worked with Miranda on In The Heights, a stage musical they developed in 2005.
This will not be Miranda’s first work in animation. He wrote the music for Disney’s latest film Moana, which was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song for ‘How Far I’ll Go’. Miranda is also serving as a creative and musical producer for The Kingkiller Chronicle series and will make his film debut in Marry Poppins Returns alongside Emily Blunt.
