Lionsgate developing movie adaptation of Rabbids video game franchise

December 15, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that Lionsgate Entertainment, Mandeville Films and Ubisoft are teaming up for a live-action/CG-animated adaptation of thehit video game franchise Rabbids, with Todd Strauss-Schulson (Isn’t It Romantic) in talks to direct.

Originally appearing as antagonists in the Rayman video game franchise in 2006’s Rayman Raving Rabbids, the wild rabbit-like creatures eventually spun off into their own series, which has shifted over 14 million copies worldwide to date. The franchise also spawned the animated TV series Rabbids Invasion, which has run for four seasons to date.

Beauty and the Beast and Wonder producers Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman of Mandeville Films are set to produce Rabbids with Ubisoft’s Jason Altman and Margaret Boykin, while the script has been written by Matt Senreich, Tom Sheppard and Zeb Wells.

Rabbids becomes the latest video game adaptation set up at Ubisoft Motion Pictures, where it joins a development slate that also includes feature film versions of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon, Tom Clancy’s The Division, Watch_Dogs and Werewolves Within. The studio released its first feature, the poorly-received Assassin’s Creed, back in 2016.
